West Mersea Carpet Cleaning, Booked Around the Strood Tide

Island work, planned around the tide on the Strood.

Every job is carried out by Louis Cuthbertson himself. Based in Colchester, Essex.

Cleaning Carpets, Upholstery and Floors in West Mersea

Getting to West Mersea is the first part of any job here. The Strood floods on high spring tides and the island is cut off for a period around them, so a visit is planned against the tide table rather than against the diary. That is not a complication anywhere else Cutlor’s works. It means a start time is agreed with the water in mind, and it means neither of us wants a van sitting on the wrong side of a flooded road.

The housing runs from long standing cottages to modern bungalows, with holiday chalets and caravan pitches along the seafront and behind it. What they share is the sand. It comes off the beach on shoes, on towels, in dog fur and in the bottom of bags, and it does not sit politely on the surface. Sand is abrasive, it works down into the pile and it grinds at the fibre every time somebody walks over it, which is why island carpets often go dull in the traffic areas long before they wear thin anywhere else.

Then there is the weather. Salt air and wind get into everything on a seafront, damp lingers in a place that is closed up between visits, and a chalet or a let shut for a fortnight smells of it when the door opens. A good deal of the work here is changeover cleaning: carpets and sofas turned round between bookings, and second homes opened up before the family arrives. Tell Louis what the property is used for, because a permanently occupied bungalow and a let that sits empty half the year need different judgement calls.

Work Cutlor’s Takes On in West Mersea

The same seven services everywhere, ordered here by what the island actually throws at a floor.

  • Carpet Cleaning

Sand is the constant here. It settles into pile in hallways, on stairs and anywhere a back door opens onto the garden, and no domestic vacuum lifts the whole of it.

  • Hard Floor Cleaning

Entrance areas and kitchens in seafront properties take grit straight off the beach. Hard flooring there goes dull and filmy in a way mopping keeps putting back as fast as it takes off.

  • Upholstery Cleaning

Sofas in chalets and holiday lets get heavy seasonal use from people who have just come off the beach, and the seating in a permanently occupied bungalow gets years of quieter use instead.

  • Emergency Flood Response

A pipe that lets go in an empty holiday property can run a long time before anyone opens the door. Extraction and cleaning support once carpets, underlay and furnishings are wet.

  • Stain Removal

Individual marks rather than whole rooms: wet dog on a landing, a drink on a lounge carpet, or whatever the last set of visitors left behind in a let.

  • Carpet Repairs

Burns, splits and lifted patches in chalets and older cottages, where relaying a whole room to fix damage the size of a hand is a poor use of money.

  • Insurance Work

A plain written account of the cleaning side of an insured escape of water, set out so the person handling the claim can read it without translation.

Questions From the Island

Does the tide on the Strood affect when you can come?

Yes, and it is worth saying so at the point of booking. Around high spring tides the Strood goes under and the island is shut off for a period, so a visit is set for a window that clears it at both ends. If you know the tide times for the day you want, say so when you enquire and it saves a conversation.

We have a beach hut. Is there anything you can do for it?

Realistically, not much. A beach hut is not the sort of space this equipment is built around, and there is rarely a carpet or an upholstered piece in one worth treating. If you have something in there you are unsure about, describe it when you enquire and you will get a straight yes or no rather than a wasted visit.

Sand has gone right through the carpet in our hallway. Can that be got out?

Loose sand and the soil around it come out of most carpets. What does not come back is fibre that sand has already worn down, because grit acts like sandpaper underfoot and that change is physical rather than dirt. Louis will look at the pile and tell you which of the two you are dealing with before starting, so you know what to expect.

Our place is a holiday let. Can you clean between bookings?

That is a regular part of the work here. What helps is knowing how tight the turnaround is, how many rooms are carpeted and whether the seating is included, because a let with a short gap between guests needs the visit planned differently to a house someone lives in. Drying time also matters more when the next arrival is fixed.

Can you get to a caravan or a chalet on one of the parks?

Usually, and access is the thing to check first. The equipment needs to be near enough to run hoses in, and some pitches are awkward to reach with a van. Say which park you are on and where a vehicle can actually stop, and Louis will tell you whether it works before anything is arranged.

The house smells damp after being shut up. Will cleaning the carpet fix that?

It may help and it may not be the cause. A closed up property near the water holds moisture in soft furnishings, and cleaning can lift the soil that the smell is feeding on. If the damp is coming from the building itself, cleaning the carpet will not touch it, and you will be told that instead of being sold a job that changes nothing.

Do you charge extra for coming over to the island?

Quotes are worked out job by job, on what is actually being cleaned and how the property is laid out. There is no separate island charge printed here, because a number written on a website is not a quote. Describe the rooms and the furniture when you enquire and Louis will give you a real figure for your own place.

Our sofa faces the window and has faded on one side. Will cleaning even it out?

Fading is light damage rather than soiling, and cleaning does not reverse it. What cleaning can do is even out the difference between a faded, dusty surface and a faded, clean one, which is usually less dramatic than people hope. Louis will say plainly which part of what you are seeing is dirt and which part is the sun.

Is it worth cleaning carpets at the end of the season or at the start?

Either works, and they solve different problems. Cleaning at the end of the season lifts a summer of sand and use before the property sits closed for months. Cleaning at the start deals with anything that has settled while it was empty. If the property is used all year, the timing matters less than how heavily the rooms are walked on.

We are not on the island ourselves. Can you deal with our managing agent?

Yes, provided it is clear who is instructing the work and who is settling the bill. Somebody has to provide access, and somebody has to look over the result at the end and hear what was and was not achieved. If that person is an agent, a caretaker or a neighbour rather than you, say so at the start and the visit can be arranged around them.

Water came in and soaked the carpet. What should we do first?

Stop the source if you can, get anything loose off the wet floor, and ring the number on this page to describe what happened and how long it has been sitting. Water travels along the backing and into the underlay, so the useful decisions are the early ones. Take photographs while it is still wet, because they are worth having if a claim follows.
